How to unsubscribe from emails on Gmail in bulk
If you’re getting unwanted messages to your Gmail because of old subscriptions, unsubscribing from them one at a time might not be the best way to get rid of the inbox clutter.
Unfortunately, Google doesn’t offer a way to automate unsubscribe requests from different email subscriptions at once. If you want to do it through Google, you’ll have to unsubscribe one at a time.
However, there are other methods to prevent these subscription emails from reaching your inbox in bulk. Alternatively, you can use a Google unsubscribe tool to unsubscribe for you. We’ll go over both options below.
In short:
- Set a filter to automatically delete emails from specific senders or containing specific keywords, such as “unsubscribe.”
- Create a label called “subscriptions” for emails from specific senders or containing keywords such as “unsubscribe,” so you can easily manage all your subscription emails in one place.
- Use a third-party Gmail unsubscribe tool to mass unsubscribe.
1) Use a Gmail unsubscribe tool
Using a Gmail unsubscribe tool comes with both upsides and downsides. Generally, we don’t recommend using this type of tool due to the associated privacy and security risks.
Note: Using an email unsubscribe tool means granting it access to your Gmail account. This can be risky, especially if you use this email account to sign up for other online accounts and services. If the tool you use goes rogue or it experiences a hack or data breach, this could compromise ALL of your accounts linked to this email address.
If you still decide to opt for a Gmail unsubscribe tool, make sure to choose one from a developer you trust. We would also recommend you only use such tools with email accounts that aren’t linked to anything sensitive, such as bank accounts.
Here are some tools you can use to unsubscribe from Gmail emails in bulk:
2) Use filters
If you’d rather avoid using a third-party tool, you can still unsubscribe through Gmail itself. While there’s no mass unsubscribe feature in Gmail, you can use a clever workaround to achieve the same result—a clutter free inbox. Set a filter to automatically delete past and future emails that meet certain criteria.
Note: Some emails containing the keywords you filter may not be subscription emails.
a) Use filters to delete all matching emails
If you want to use filters to effectively “unsubscribe,” here’s how:
- Open your Gmail inbox.
- Click the filters icon in the search bar.
- Enter specific senders or keywords, such as “unsubscribe” or “opt out.”
- Click “create filter.”
- Tick the boxes next to “delete it” and “also apply filter to matching conversations.”
- Click “create filter.”

b) Use filter to apply labels to all matching emails
If you like the filter idea but are worried about accidentally deleting emails you may need, you can use labels instead. This will allow you to create a way to easily manage multiple subscriptions while preventing important messages from being deleted automatically.
Here’s how:
- Open your Gmail inbox.
- Click the filters icon in the search bar.
- Enter specific senders or keywords, such as “unsubscribe,” “opt out,” or “manage preferences.”
- Click “create filter.”
- Tick the boxes next to “apply the label” and “also apply filter to matching conversations.”
- Click “choose label” and then “new label.”
- Enter a label, such as “subscriptions,” and click “create.”
This will automatically apply a subscription label to all current and future emails that meet the criteria you set. It may take some time for Gmail to sort through your inbox but you should now be able to search “label:subscriptions” (without the quotation marks) and view all emails containing this keyword.
Next, you can either select all and delete or move to spam.
3) Unsubscribe one at a time
If creating a filter risks deleting emails you don’t want to delete and using a Gmail unsubscribe tool isn’t worth the risk, you’ll have to unsubscribe the good, old-fashioned way: one at a time, using the Google unsubscribe feature.
Note: Only use the unsubscribe option if you are certain the email is from a legitimate sender. Unsubscribe links can download malicious software on your device or lead you to malicious sites.
Even if you recognize and trust the sender, always check the email address carefully for small mistakes that could easily be overlooked. Scammers often spoof email addresses to trick you into clicking malicious links and giving up your personal information. If you’re not sure about the legitimacy of the sender, it’s always safer to report the email as spam and block the sender rather than click an unsubscribe link.
Once you’ve verified the sender, here’s how to send an unsubscribe request:
- Open your Gmail inbox (don’t forget to check your spam folder).
- Use the search bar to find emails you want to unsubscribe from.
- Open the email you want to unsubscribe from.
- Next to the sender, click the “unsubscribe” button.
- Click “go to website” to complete the unsubscription there.
b) Unsubscribe link in email
- Open your Gmail inbox.
- Use the search bar to find emails you want to unsubscribe from.
- Open the email you want to unsubscribe from.
- Scroll down and click the unsubscribe link (usually at the bottom of the email).
- Follow the instructions on the website you’re redirected to.
