FamilyTreeNow is a free genealogy website that doubles as a people search site. By typing in only a first and last name, you can gain access to information such as the person’s current and past addresses, phone numbers, and age. 

FamilyTreeNow advertises that thanks to their site, you can find family members and possible relatives and create your own family tree. Even though this seems like a lot of data, FamilyTreeNow states that it gathers this information solely from public records and some other open sources. 

That said, just because the data is supposedly legal, it doesn’t mean you want your Personally Identifiable Information available to strangers through the FamilyTreeNow website.

How to opt out of FamilyTreeNow and remove your info

In short:

  1. Head to the FamilyTreeNow opt-out page at https://www.familytreenow.com/optout
  2. Fill in your personal info and hit the “search” button to search for your record
  3. Find your listing and click “View Details”
  4. Begin the opt-out process by clicking the red “opt out this record” button
  5. Check your inbox and open the verification email. Click on the opt-out request link to verify your opt-out request

Step-by-step FamilyTreeNow opt-out guide

  1. Head to the FamilyTreeNow opt-out page at https://www.familytreenow.com/optout

    Go to the FamilyTreeNow opt-out page. Enter your email address, check the CAPTCHA box, and click the “begin opt out procedure” button. 

  2. Fill in your personal info and hit the “search” button to search for your record

    Enter your first name, middle name, last name, city, state, and birth year. Once you fill out the form, hit the “search” button.

    TIP:  Unless absolutely necessary, avoid providing FamilyTreeNow with any additional information, such as your birth country or phone number. Enter this info only if you are having trouble finding your record.

  3. Find your listing and click “View Details”

    Find your record in the results list and click the “view details” button. 

  4. Begin the opt-out process by clicking the red “opt out this record” button

    Click on the red “opt out this record” button above the full name section.

  5. Check your inbox and open the verification email. Click on the opt-out request link to verify your opt-out request

6. Continue your data removal journey

Once you’ve gone through the opt-out process successfully, FamilyTreeNow will inform you that it may take up to 72 hours for your record to be removed. Most records are removed immediately, but give it time. Check back in 3 days to ensure your listing is, in fact, gone.
