Experian Opt Out & Data Removal Guide

Experian is a major credit bureau that collects your financial information, compiles a credit report on you, and sells prescreened lists to insurers, credit card companies, and other financial institutions. These companies then send credit and insurance offers based on the reports.

If you don’t want to receive these unsolicited offers, you can opt out under data privacy regulations such as the California Consumer Privacy Act. Opting out will not affect your credit score or ability to get credit in the future.

You can submit an opt out request directly to Experian but their opt-out process requires entering your social security number and date of birth. We do not recommend this course of action.

Instead, our guide gives you the option to bypass this requirement and opt out from Experian, as well as the other three major credit bureaus, without having to provide this sensitive information.

You can either choose a temporary opt out for five years, for which you can submit a request online, or you can send a written request for a permanent opt out. We will cover the latter in this guide.

6. Continue your data removal journey

If you have followed this process, you will opt out from Experian, Equifax, Innovis, and TransUnion. These are some of the largest credit reporting agencies in the US and have a lot of your sensitive financial data. However, they are not the only ones that do, and they certainly aren’t the worst.

The truth is, your sensitive data can be used for more than prescreened credit offers. There are thousands of data brokers worldwide, and most of them sell your info to marketing companies, businesses, recruiters, or the general public.

This can lead to nuisances such as junk mail and unwanted phone calls. But more importantly, it exposes you to serious risks such as scams, online harassment, and identity theft.

Look up your name and you’ll likely find several people search websites that publish your personal information publicly. But there will be even more data brokers who are more difficult to find. Research which data brokers are active in your area and send out blind removal requests.
